Final Essay Based on the Film you choose...

Dear Students,

Claudia and I have decided to change the focus of the writing from a purely film review issue to an essay whose focus is to show the advantages or disadvantages of the film (Elizabeth or Modern times) as a pedagogical tool. You should write bearing in mind that the essay is meant for an English teacher or future English teacher to read and see if the use of either of these films might be beneficial to his/her learning/teaching experience.

These are the instructions, marking criteria and guidelines to write your final essay based on a film you have seen during this term:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/01/

http://depts.washington.edu/pswrite/grading.html

1. Write about 700 words.
2. Write a catchy title that is clearly linked with your writing
3. State your purpose clearly at the beginning. Explain structure of the essay.
4. Each paragraph should contain a clear idea.
5. Use linking words between paragraphs to make the text flow.
6. Give your opinion and clearly explain your rationale behind your thinking.
7. Write a conclusion that clearly summarises the main points you´ve raised, and that shows your critical engagement.

Deadline, Friday 4 at 12.00. Please leave two copies with Normita and upload it to your blog.

Oscar L.

Modern Times!!!

Hello everybody!

I hope you are all ok!

After watching the film “Modern Times” you have to write a post in which you discuss the influence that industrialization and Modernity had on people’s everyday life.

What are the elements seen in the film that support this idea?
What were the changes that modernity brought to people’s life?

Remember that your post must be between 150-180 words.

Deadline; Sunday, November 15th at midnight.

During this weekend you will have my comments in your blogs about your last post about film Elizabeth.

Kind Regards,
Oscar L.

"Elizabeth: The Golden Age"

Dear students,

In the following post you will have to write about the importance of the Elizabeth’s reign in the British History. You should base your ideas on what you have already discussed in class and also from the movie we saw last Friday: “Elizabeth; The Golden Age”.

Remember that you are supposed to be writing about your own understanding of Elizabeth’s reign and its importance for the British culture and history.

Some questions that you might want to bear in mind for the post are:

What were the consequences that Elizabeth and her reign had?

What were the conflicts that existed between England and Spain?

Why was she called “the Virgin Queen” and what were the consequences that this name brought to her?

Remember that the word length is between 150- 180.

The Deadline is Sunday, November 8th at midnight.

Regards,

Oscar Luna O.

I will be in charge of commenting your entries and I will also be giving you some feedback about your ideas.

Welcome!!

Dear all,

I would like to thank Oscar for setting this blog up. The pictures are great!!. Some people have managed to send their blog addresses to Oscar, some have sent them to me. Please send them all to Oscar to the following email address Cultureandcivilization2009@gmail.com.

First task for you to do is to write a 150-word-long post stating what you expect of this course. Deadline Sunday 16 at 20.00.

One of the activities we did last class was for you to say two words you associated several pictures/paintings with. Group 1 came up with the following words (thank you Adrián for sending them to me):

Drawing 1: art, Paris, beauty, culture triangle, mystery, Mona Lisa, glass, history.

Drawing 2: U.S, culture, symbol, empire, promise, summer, hopes, dreams.

Drawing 3: Honey moon, artist, university, cathedral, river, people, knowledge, sports.

Drawing 4: wars, kingdom, old, castle, snobby, destruction.

Drawing 5: scream, desperation, drawing, art, book, unique, scary, crazy, suffering.

Drawing 6: soul, evil, discover, observe, reflect, colours, sickness.

Drawing 7: Psychology, power, mirror, control, sides, reflection, perspective, abstract.

Now discuss:

After reading the article by Berger, would you change the words, why, why not?.

For the sessions about culture and civilization, please read the articles provided in the following link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization. Click on the word "culture" which will take you to another website.

Think of the definitions of culture and civilization provided in the articles. What´s the relationship between them?

Cheers,
Claudia

WELCOME! Ways of seeing

We all have eyes...but there are different ways of seeing... or not?
